Royal Velvet Purple Aeonium 'Velours' (Aeonium arboreum 'Velours')
Get ready to bring aristocratic drama, refined exoticism, and the most stunning color transition in the world of houseplants into your home or on a sunny windowsill – the unbeatable Aeonium 'Velours'! This rare and highly prized succulent among designers is a true living jewel of nature, captivating completely with its expressive, sculptural structure. The plant’s greatest pride and main calling card are its large, thick leaf rosettes, visually resembling perfect, gigantic roses covered with a deep, velvety, and shimmering blend of dark purple, chocolate, and burgundy tones. This dramatic, royal tone is flawlessly complemented and highlighted by the very center of the rosettes, which blooms in fresh, shimmering jade green, creating a stunning visual contrast and a 3D depth effect. As it grows, the aeonium forms a strong, woody stem and boldly branches out, transforming into a small, magnificent purple tree. It is currently beautifully matured, strong, and distinctly stable at 15 cm tall in a compact 10 cm pot. It is the most prestigious, tasteful, and uniquely gift for modern minimalism enthusiasts, succulent collectors, and anyone who wants to see grand natural architecture in their home with exceptionally easy care!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Exceptionally generous, bright, and sunny environment! Here lies the main secret of this plant’s deep velvet purple: Aeonium 'Velours' requires the maximum amount of sunlight (it especially loves sun rays). Only in full sun will its rosettes color in the famous, almost black-purple tone and maintain a dense, compact rose shape. If the light is insufficient, the plant will lose its burgundy splendor, turn simply green, and the shoots will start to stretch unattractively. A south or west-facing windowsill is the perfect choice!
-
💧 Watering: Extremely rare, minimal, and very thoughtful. As a proper desert and Canary Islands native, the aeonium stores large moisture reserves in its thick, juicy leaves and does not tolerate living in constant moisture. Water the plant only when the soil in the pot is completely, 100% dry down to the very bottom between waterings! Since the plant is in a 10 cm pot, it dries out relatively quickly, but the plant absolutely cannot tolerate root rot caused by standing water in the saucer, which can rapidly cause decay of the sensitive root system. In winter months (the plant’s dormant period), reduce watering to an absolute minimum – once a month is completely sufficient. If in doubt – never water!
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Thrives comfortably in warmth and pronounced dryness (+18°C to +27°C). This succulent tolerates dry indoor air without any problems, the heat of the heating season, and does not require any misting or additional humidification. On the contrary – high humidity and leaf misting can harm it. The only rule: protect it from temperatures dropping below +10°C and icy drafts in winter.
-
🐾 Pets: Friendly. This exotic and sculptural purple aeonium is completely non-toxic and safe in your home with curious cats and dogs.
🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:

⚠️ Note and reality check about aeoniums: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and its exact distribution of purple and green tones in the rosette may vary slightly, creating a unique natural form. An important secret of nature: aeoniums naturally shed leaves – as the stem grows longer, the lower leaves in the rosette gradually dry out and fall off, forming a beautiful woody stem (this is not a defect but the plant’s natural development!). Since this is already a nicely matured plant in a stable 10 cm pot, it will not require immediate repotting for a very long time. When you repot it in the future, ALWAYS use a special, highly porous, sandy, and mineralized cactus/succulent soil mix (rich in gravel and perlite) to ensure water drains instantly through the pot and the roots always remain dry and healthy.
