Spider Orchid or Brassia 'Summer Dream' (Brassia 'Summer Dream')

This extremely unusual, exotic, and visually striking Brassia 'Summer Dream', rightly known around the world as the “Spider Orchid” (thanks to its long, delicate petals that resemble spider legs), is a truly unique find for any plant lover! Its flowers usually appear in light yellow-green tones with distinctive dark speckles, creating a fantastic tropical look. But the greatest and most wonderful “special feature” of this orchid is its fragrance – when kept warm and exposed to sunlight, its flowers awaken and begin releasing a wonderful, sweetly spicy scent! Since this is still a small young plant in a very small pot, you will have an excellent opportunity to watch it gain strength, produce new shoots (pseudobulbs), and prepare for its fragrant debut. It is an elegant and highly original houseplant that will add a refined, mysterious, and exotic natural accent to any interior. It is an ideal, completely safe, and rewarding gift for both experienced orchid collectors and lovers of rare natural treasures!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

• ☀️ Light: Bright but indirect light. For Brassia to produce flower spikes and bloom profusely, it needs a great deal of light (more than popular Phalaenopsis orchids). An east- or west-facing windowsill is ideal. Protect it from very intense midday sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

• 💧 Watering: Moderate and very careful. Remember that orchids are epiphytes (in nature, they grow on tree branches rather than in soil), so their roots need to dry out slightly between waterings. The best method is soaking (submerging the pot in room-temperature water for 10–15 minutes and then allowing the excess water to drain away completely). It absolutely cannot tolerate its roots standing in stagnant water in the saucer!

• 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: It loves warmth and absolutely adores high humidity! The golden rule for this plant: to enjoy its famous fragrance during flowering, the plant must be kept pleasantly warm (the flowers may not be fragrant in a cool room). Protect it strictly from cold drafts!

• 🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly. This exotic and fragrant orchid is non-toxic and completely safe to keep in your home with curious cats and dogs.

🏠 BEST ROOM:

• A bright, warm living-room windowsill (where warm sunlight during flowering will help release the fragrance of the flowers).

• A bright bathroom with a window (an absolutely ideal place for any orchid, as they adore the natural humidity found there).

⚠️ Note: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen may vary slightly. It is important to understand nature’s secrets: this orchid grows by forming swellings known as pseudobulbs, where it stores water and nutrients. If you notice that these bulbs are beginning to wrinkle slightly, this is the first sign that the plant needs a drink! Once the Brassia has finished flowering, the flower spike can be cut off, as it will not bloom again (new flower spikes will always form only from completely new, newly grown pseudobulbs). When repotting, never use ordinary houseplant soil! Be sure to use only a special, exceptionally airy orchid substrate (medium- or fine-grade pine bark), so the roots can breathe freely.
