Royal Zebra Calathea (Goeppertia zebrina / Calathea zebrina)
Get ready to bring true tropical rainforest energy, top-tier exoticism, and living natural art into your home – the stunning Zebra Calathea! This species is one of the most majestic, famous, and highly valued large calatheas among interior designers, belonging to the absolute aristocracy of houseplants. Its greatest pride and main hallmark is its completely surreal, obviously luxurious foliage: the large, oval, and elegant leaves boast a distinctive, bold striped pattern that perfectly resembles a zebra’s coat. On a bright lime green base tone, wide, parallel stripes and drops in dark green dramatically stand out, stretching from the central vein to the leaf edges. But the plant’s greatest fame lies in its texture – the leaf surface has an incredibly thick, soft, and pronounced royal velvet covering that you want to touch again and again. The underside of the leaves surprises with a deep, metallic purple tone. Moreover, this plant is a magical "prayer plant" (prayer plant) – at nightfall, it acoustically rustles as it lifts its leaves upward like hands in prayer, revealing the dark underside, and in the morning, it generously unfolds them again toward the light. In addition to its breathtaking appearance, this calathea is an excellent air purification champion, actively humidifying the indoor air and neutralizing household toxins. It is currently beautifully matured, strong, lush, and very stable, a 30-35 cm plant in a generous, large 14 cm pot. It is the most prestigious and guaranteed unforgettable gift for modern style connoisseurs and those who want to see grand natural geometry in their interior!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Moderate to medium bright, but MANDATORILY diffused light. This is the main secret of this plant’s velvety beauty: in the wild, calatheas grow in the understory of Brazilian rainforests, in the shade of large trees, so they categorically and strictly do not tolerate direct midday sunlight, which will instantly burn their unique velvet leaves, making them pale and fading the bright zebra pattern. It prefers pleasant, filtered lighting or a spot in moderate partial shade near an east or west window.
-
💧 Watering: Regular, moderate, and very precise. Calatheas do not forgive overwatering or complete drying out. Water the plant when the top layer of soil (the upper 1-2 cm of the pot) has just started to dry out between waterings! The soil should always feel pleasantly, lightly moist like a wrung-out sponge. Since the plant is in a large 14 cm pot, it will retain moisture longer, so the plant categorically does not tolerate root soaking in standing water in the saucer, which quickly causes sensitive root rot. Water only with soft, filtered, or settled lukewarm water.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: A warmth-loving tropical queen (ideally +18°C to +24°C), which due to its origin will be infinitely grateful for increased air humidity (above 55-60%). To keep its large velvet leaves perfectly smooth and prevent brown leaf edges, place it near a humidifier, group it with other plants, or set it on a tray with moist pebbles. In winter, strictly and categorically protect it from dry radiator air and cold drafts!
-
🐾 Pets: Friendly. This exclusive and magnificent calathea is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe in your home with curious cats and dogs.
🏠 BEST SUITED ROOM:
-
Bright and warm living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices (in places with moderate, diffused light), where this large, striped silhouette and exotic texture can serve as the main interior design and conversation piece.
-
Progressive and well-ventilated spaces where it is necessary to improve the indoor microclimate, generously produce oxygen, and increase air humidity.
SPECIFICATIONS:
-
Height: 30-35 cm (beautifully matured, strong, lush, and already a large plant with expressive leaves)
-
Pot diameter: 14 cm (stable, generous, and large volume that ensures an excellent root system)
⚠️ Note and reality check about calatheas: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and the exact placement of its leaf stripes may vary slightly, creating a unique natural painting (new leaves initially unfold in softer, lighter tones, and their dramatic zebra pattern and velvety firmness intensify as the leaf gradually matures). Since this is already a nicely matured, strong plant in a generous 14 cm pot, it is much more resilient and stable than small seedlings. Do not repot this plant immediately into a much larger pot – calatheas prefer a compact environment, and excess, unused soil can hold moisture for a long time. When you repot it in the future, be sure to use a light, airy, slightly acidic, and loose houseplant soil mix (richly supplemented with perlite and a little peat) to ensure the roots get oxygen and excess water drains immediately through the pot.
