Cussonia

Kusonia or African cabbage tree (Cussonia)

This extraordinarily unusual, architectural, and exotic Kusonia, also known in its native South Africa as the "Cabbage tree", is a true find for lovers of unique forms! It stands out with its substantial, bottle-shaped or delicate bonsai-like trunk (caudex), topped by a magnificent, umbrella-like crown with bluish-green or grayish-green, deeply divided, and highly expressive leaves. Thanks to its thick trunk, where the plant skillfully stores water reserves, it is an extraordinarily patient and drought-tolerant houseplant and summer patio plant that will add a sculptural, bold, and desert-like natural accent to any interior. It is an exclusive, long-lived, and highly surprising gift for experienced succulent collectors, as well as for those who tend to forget to water their plants regularly amid the rush of everyday life!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

• ☀️ Light: Maximum bright light and direct sunlight! For the kusonia to develop its massive trunk and for its leaves to grow densely and beautifully, it vitally needs plenty of light. A south- or southwest-facing windowsill will be an absolutely ideal choice. In a spot that is too dark, the plant will become weak and grow unattractively leggy.

• 💧 Watering: Infrequent and very careful. As a plant native to dry regions that stores water in its thick trunk and roots, it requires a watering routine typical of succulents. Allow the soil to dry out completely and deeply between waterings! It absolutely cannot tolerate its roots soaking in standing water in the saucer, which will quickly cause root and trunk rot. In winter, reduce watering to an absolute minimum.

• 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: It feels excellent in warm conditions and literally loves ordinary, dry indoor air. This plant does not need misting! During the warm summer months, it is definitely recommended to move the kusonia outdoors into the fresh air on a sunny patio or balcony. In winter, it will appreciate slightly cooler rooms, but protect it carefully from frost and icy drafts.

• 🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly. The plant is not considered toxic and is safe to keep in your home with curious cats and dogs.

🏠 IDEAL LOCATION:

• The sunniest and brightest living room windowsill (as a noticeable, visually clean, and sculptural design element).

• A bright and sunny patio or balcony in summer (where it will enjoy the fresh air and be reminded of its natural African environment).

SPECIFICATIONS:

• Height: 35 cm

• Pot diameter: 17 cm

⚠️ Note: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen, leaf crown, and trunk (caudex) thickness may vary. It is important to understand nature's secrets: kusonias naturally tend to shed their oldest lower leaves, slowly growing a bare trunk upward - this is a completely normal part of trunk formation! Likewise, during the winter dormancy period (if the room is cooler and darker), it may shed most of its leaves and "go to sleep", but they will grow back in spring. When repotting, it is strictly forbidden to use ordinary, dense, moisture-retaining houseplant soil! Be sure to use an extremely airy and loose cactus and succulent soil mix, generously blended with pumice, perlite, and coarse sand. Kusonias have deep roots, so when repotting, choose a pot that is deeper rather than wider.
