Fockea or Caudex Plant (Fockea edulis)

This extremely unusual, exotic, and distinctive succulent is a true botanical wonder and every plant collector’s dream! Fockea (also known as the Caudex Plant) is best known and most admired for its massive, woody, tuber-like—or even large-potato-like—stem, known as a caudex, which serves as a huge reservoir of water and nutrients. In spring and summer, delicate green vines with small leaves extend from this rough tuber; they can either hang elegantly or wind around a small support. An interesting fact: the word edulis means “edible” in translation, because in its native region (South Africa), local people have historically used this tuber as a bread substitute, but only after very long and specific cooking (it is poisonous when raw!). This slow-growing, extremely patient, and sculptural houseplant will add an unusual, desert-like, and highly original natural accent to any interior. It is an exclusive, rewarding-to-grow, and unique gift for lovers of succulents, bonsai trees, and rare plants!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

• ☀️ Light: Bright light and some direct sunlight. The green vines need plenty of light to prevent them from becoming leggy. However, strictly protect the caudex (tuber) itself from very intense midday sunlight, which can burn its skin! An east- or west-facing windowsill, or a slightly shaded south-facing windowsill, is ideal.

• 💧 Watering: Infrequent and very careful. Thanks to its massive tuber, Fockea tolerates drying out much better than overwatering! Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. It strictly cannot tolerate its roots soaking in standing water in the saucer, which will rapidly cause the tuber to rot and the plant to die. During the winter months, reduce watering to an absolute minimum.

• 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: It thrives at standard room temperature and absolutely loves ordinary, dry indoor air! This plant must never be misted. In summer, it can safely be moved outdoors into the fresh air on a sunny terrace, but in winter protect it carefully from the cold (the temperature must not fall below 10–12°C).

• 🐾 Pets: Not pet-friendly. The plant, especially its sap, is toxic to cats and dogs. When fresh, it contains substances that may cause digestive problems and irritation of the mouth if chewed. Keep it out of your pets’ reach!

• Bright windowsill (an absolute prerequisite for compact foliage growth).

• Bright desk directly beside a window (a fascinating and unusual mini design object to admire while working).

⚠️ Note: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and the unique shape of its tuber may differ slightly from the description (each one is an inimitable sculptural work of art created by nature!). It is important to know nature’s secrets: in its natural habitat, the Fockea tuber is mostly underground, but when grown as a houseplant, it is planted so that it remains partially above the soil, highlighting its beauty. Fockea may enter a winter dormancy period—if its leaves begin to turn yellow and fall or its vines dry out in autumn or winter, do not panic; the plant has not died! It is simply resting. Stop watering during this time. New green shoots will grow from the tuber again in spring. You can safely trim the vines or train them around a decorative support to control the plant’s shape. When repotting, be sure to use very loose, sandy soil (soil intended for cacti and succulents with good drainage).
