Royal Coral Cactus 'Dancing Bones' (Hatiora salicornioides)
Get ready to bring unusual botanical architecture, tropical rainforest exoticism, and the most playful silhouette in the world of houseplants into your home or office - the stunning Hatiora (Hatiora salicornioides, also affectionately known as "dancing bones", bottle cactus, or coral cactus)! This exclusive epiphytic cactus from the Brazilian rainforests is radically different from classic, spiny desert cacti. The plant's greatest pride, magnet, and unmistakable signature is its breathtaking and highly structured silhouette: it has no classic leaves, but forms an exceptionally dense and delicate cascade of bright green, segmented stems that visually resemble miniature bottles, sea corals, or "dancing bones". As spring approaches, this unusual green shrub generously crowns itself with bright yellow or golden-orange bell-shaped flowers right at the tips of the stems, creating a true festive atmosphere. It is currently a nicely grown, strong, exceptionally dense, and highly promising 15-20 cm plant in a compact 11 pot. It is the most prestigious, tasteful, and reliable gift for housewarmings, plant shelves, lovers of unusual shapes, and anyone looking for a visually striking yet absolutely friendly natural wonder for their home!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Bright but ABSOLUTELY indirect light. Here lies the main secret to this epiphytic cactus's health: in nature, hatioras grow on tree branches in the shade of the tree canopy, so they need plenty of filtered light. Protect it categorically from direct, scorching midday sunlight, which can quickly burn its delicate stems and turn them an unattractive reddish or yellow color. An east- or west-facing windowsill will be perfect.
-
💧 Watering: Regular and very careful - remember, this IS a JUNGLE, not a desert cactus! Hatiora likes slight moisture, but absolutely cannot tolerate waterlogged roots. Water the plant generously, but ONLY when the topsoil (the upper 2-3 cm of the pot) has dried out completely. Since this plant is in a size 11 pot, make sure it does not dry out completely (the segments will start to wrinkle), but it absolutely cannot tolerate its roots standing in water in the saucer. Reduce watering slightly in winter.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: It feels perfectly comfortable at normal room temperatures (+18°C to +25°C). This plant tolerates ordinary indoor air well, but will appreciate higher humidity. The golden secret to flowering: for the hatiora to bloom in spring, it is recommended to provide it with a slightly cooler resting period during the winter months (approximately 6-8 weeks) at around +15°C.
-
🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly / Non-toxic. Hatiora is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe to keep in your home with curious cats and dogs.
🏠 MOST SUITABLE SPACE:
-
Bright desks, open shelves, and macramé hanging pots (in the future), where this segmented silhouette will be able to stand out fully.

⚠️ Note and a dose of reality about hatioras: Plants are living organisms, so every specimen and its precise stem branching pattern is a completely unique work of nature. An important botanical fact: while the hatiora is young, it grows as an upright, vertical shrub. But as the years pass and the stems become longer and heavier, it will naturally transform into an elegant trailing plant! If the plant suddenly begins dropping its small segments en masse (they simply detach and fall off), this is a loud warning sign that the plant has experienced stress - it has either been severely overwatered or allowed to dry out completely. When you repot it in the future, you MUST use a special, very light, airy, and exceptionally well-draining epiphyte or cactus/succulent potting mix (with a generous addition of pine bark and perlite) so that the delicate roots can breathe freely.
