Hoya or Wax Flower 'Cinnamomifolia' (Hoya cinnamomifolia)
This extremely stunning, historic, and botanically fascinating Hoya or Wax Flower 'Cinnamomifolia' is a true treasure in the home of any tropical plant collector! It originates from the forests of Java Island (Indonesia) and got its unusual name because its leaves visually closely resemble the foliage of the cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum). This species stands out with massive, thick, and glossy dark green leaves, decorated with three to five very distinct, light green or yellowish longitudinal veins, creating a sculptural and 3D relief effect. However, this hoya has gained the greatest fame for its flowers – when properly cared for, it will bloom in the future with stunning, waxy flower clusters that combine unusually greenish-yellow petals with a bright purple-red or blood-red center! Currently, it is a small young plant, but over time it will grow into an impressive, long-living, and air-purifying vine that will add a luxury-class tropical nature accent to any interior. It is an exclusive and completely safe gift for rarity hunters and anyone who appreciates expressive leaf textures!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Bright but diffused light. This is the main secret to the plant’s beauty and flowering: for the hoya to maintain its vivid venation and bloom in the future with unique red flowers, it vitally needs a large amount of light (it will especially enjoy morning or late evening sun rays). However, strictly protect it from direct, scorching midday sun rays, which will instantly bleach and burn its large leaves. An east or west-facing windowsill is an absolutely excellent choice.
-
💧 Watering: Moderate and very careful. Its hard, fleshy leaves work perfectly as water reservoirs. Allow the top layer and the middle layer of the soil to dry out thoroughly between watering sessions! It absolutely cannot tolerate root soaking in standing water in the saucer, which will quickly cause root rot. The best indicator: if the leaves are very hard and firm, the plant does not need watering; if they become a bit more flexible or wrinkled – it’s time to water.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Loves warmth (ideally above +20°C) and, being a true inhabitant of the Javan jungle, it will be extremely happy in an oasis with increased air humidity. High humidity will promote much faster leaf development and protect the large leaf tips from browning. In winter, strictly protect it from sudden temperature fluctuations and cold drafts!
-
🐾 Pets: Friendly. This gorgeous wax flower is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe in your home with curious cats and dogs.
🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:
-
A bright and warm windowsill with morning or evening sun next to a humidifier.
-
A bright spot where the plant has a stable support (ladder or metal ring) for its large and heavy leaves to climb and twine upwards in the future.
SPECIFICATIONS:
-
Height: 10-15 cm (young plant / length of the stem at the time of receipt)
-
Pot diameter: 10.5 cm
⚠️ Note and reality check about wax flowers: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and its leaf size or vein expressiveness may vary slightly. It is extremely important to keep in mind that you are receiving a young plant! Small plants should be handled more gently than mature ones. It is important to know nature’s secrets: hoyas naturally grow as vines and regularly produce long, "bare" shoots (stems) that initially have no leaves. Never cut these off! This is a completely normal growth process – when the stem finds support or senses enough light, new, massive leaves will gradually start to form on it. If the plant blooms in the future, after flowering never cut off old flower stalks, because the hoya will bloom next season from those same stems! When repotting this plant, ALWAYS use an extremely airy aroid or epiphyte soil mix (generously mixed with large orchid bark pieces, coconut chips, and perlite) so its roots can breathe freely.
