Hoya or Wax Flower 'Clemensiorum Short Leaf' (Hoya clemensiorum 'Short Leaf')

This extremely rare, exotic, and visually dramatic Hoya or Wax Flower 'Clemensiorum Short Leaf' is one of the most eye-catching and desirable plants in tropical rarity collections! While the classic Hoya clemensiorum is famous for its huge and long leaves, this special 'Short Leaf' variety boasts more compact, shorter leaf shapes, retaining all the species' wild untamed character. Its leaves are incredibly tough, stiff, and literally resemble cardboard or thick metal plates. The leaf surface is covered with a stunning, pronounced, and dark embossed venation, which combined with the matte texture makes the plant look like exotic reptile or dinosaur skin. When receiving good light, its leaves tend to develop a beautiful bronze or reddish-brown tan (sun-stress effect). Currently, it is a small young plant, but over time it will grow into an impressive, air-purifying, and long-lasting vine that will add a top-class luxury and prehistoric jungle accent to any interior. It is an exclusive and completely safe gift for experienced plant lovers and hunters of rare, sculptural forms!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • ☀️ Light: Bright but diffused light. Here lies the secret to this plant’s dramatic pattern and color: for the hoya to maintain its expressive, dark relief and to develop the beautiful reddish-brown leaf tan, it vitally needs a large amount of light. However, strictly protect it from direct, scorching midday sun rays, which will instantly bleach and burn its precious leaves. An east or west-facing windowsill is an absolutely excellent choice.

  • 💧 Watering: Rare and very careful. As an epiphyte, its extremely tough and thick leaves serve as excellent water reservoirs. Allow the top layer and the middle layer of the soil to dry out thoroughly between watering sessions! It absolutely cannot tolerate root soaking in standing water in the saucer, which will quickly cause sensitive root rot. The best indicator: if the leaves are as hard as stone, the plant does not need watering; if they become a bit more flexible – it’s time to drink.

  • 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Loves warmth and, being a native of Borneo rainforests, it will be extremely happy with higher air humidity. Although its thick leaves can tolerate normal indoor air, increased humidity will promote much faster new leaf development and protect them from deformation. Strictly protect from cold drafts!

  • 🐾 Pets: Friendly. This gorgeous and exclusive wax flower is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe in your home with curious cats and dogs.

🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:

  • A bright and warm windowsill with morning or evening sun next to a humidifier (ideal environment to maintain leaf tanning and unique texture).

  • A bright spot where the plant has a stable support (ladder or arch) for its heavy, cardboard-like leaves to climb and twine upwards in the future.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Height: 10-15 cm (young plant / length of stems at the time of receipt)

  • Pot diameter: 10.5 cm

⚠️ Note and reality check about wax flowers: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and its leaf relief depth or tan intensity may vary slightly. It is extremely important to keep in mind that you are receiving a young plant! Small plants must be handled more gently than mature ones. It is important to know nature’s secrets: hoyas naturally grow as vines and regularly produce long, "bare" shoots (stems) that initially have no leaves. Never cut these off! This is a completely normal natural rhythm – when the stem finds support or senses enough light, new, unique "reptile skin" leaves will gradually start to form on it. If the plant blooms in the future, after flowering never cut off old flower stalks, because the hoya will bloom next season from those very same stems! When repotting this plant, ALWAYS use an extremely airy aroid or epiphyte soil mix (generously mixed with large orchid bark pieces, coconut chips, and perlite) so its roots can breathe freely.
