Hoya or Wax Flower 'Fitchii' (Hoya fitchii)
This extremely charming, elegant, and botanically fascinating Hoya or Wax Flower 'Fitchii' is a true rarity, originating from the exotic forests of the Philippines and named in honor of the famous plant researcher Charles Fitch. It is one of the most visually delicate hoyas, distinguished by its firm, smooth, and fleshy leaves. Its surface is adorned with an indescribably beautiful, darker, net-like or mosaic-type venation that creates an elegant stained-glass effect. But the most magical feature – when receiving excellent lighting, this plant’s leaves can undergo a wonderful transformation, acquiring a warm, yellowish-orange or soft bronze tint (sun-stress effect). Currently, it is a small seedling, but over time it will grow into a magnificent, long-living, and air-purifying vine that will add a delicate, tropical, and very cozy natural accent to any interior. It is an excellent, joy-enhancing, and completely safe gift for rarity hunters and anyone who loves unusual leaf patterns and tends to forget regular plant watering!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Bright but diffused light. Here lies the main secret to this plant’s color and stained-glass effect: for the hoya to maintain its vivid net-like pattern and develop the warm, bronze-colored leaf tint, it needs a vital amount of light (it will especially enjoy morning or late evening sun rays). However, strictly protect it from direct, scorching midday sun rays, which will instantly bleach and burn its delicate leaves. An east or west-facing windowsill is an absolutely excellent choice.
-
💧 Watering: Rare and very careful. As an epiphyte, its firm leaves work perfectly as water reservoirs. Allow the top layer of soil and the middle layer between watering sessions to dry out thoroughly! It absolutely cannot tolerate root soaking in standing water in the saucer, which will quickly cause root rot. The best indicator: if the leaves are firm and stiff, the plant does not need watering; if they become slightly more flexible – it’s time to water.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Thrives well at standard room temperature and, thanks to its thick leaves, adapts well to normal indoor air. However, being a tropical native, it will appreciate increased humidity, which promotes much faster and healthier new leaf development, as well as encourages the formation of charming, softly pink or apricot-colored flower clusters in the future. In winter, strictly protect it from cold drafts!
-
🐾 Pets: Friendly. This gorgeous wax flower is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe in your home with curious cats and dogs.
🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:
-
A bright and warm windowsill with morning or evening sun (an absolute prerequisite for maintaining the beautiful leaf tint).
-
A high shelf or a place with a compact support (arch/ladders), allowing the vine to grow airy and create an elegant interior accent.
SPECIFICATIONS:
-
Height: 10-15 cm (length of the vine at the time of receipt / seedling)
-
Pot diameter: 12 cm
⚠️ Note and reality check about wax flowers: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and the intensity of its leaf net pattern at the time of receipt may vary slightly. It is important to keep in mind that you are receiving a seedling in a 12 cm pot! Important nature secrets to know: hoyas naturally grow as vines and regularly produce long, "bare" shoots (vines) that initially have no leaves. Never cut these off! This is a completely normal natural process – when the bare vine finds support or senses enough light, new, unique leaves will gradually start to form on it. If the plant blooms in the future, after flowering never cut off old flower stalks, because the hoya will bloom next season from those very same stems! When repotting this plant, ALWAYS use a very airy aroid or epiphyte soil mix (generously mixed with orchid bark, coconut chips, and perlite) so its roots can breathe freely.
