Large-leaf Silver Hoya or Wax Flower (Hoya glabra 'Splash')
Get ready to meet one of the most impressive, powerful, and highly sought-after wax flowers among houseplant collectors – Hoya 'Glabra Splash'! This unique tropical epiphyte originates from the depths of the rainforests on the island of Borneo and belongs to the absolute aristocracy of Hoyas. Unlike the usual delicate wax flowers, this variety is famous for its ability to grow almost gigantic, broad, and distinctly firm, leathery leaves. However, the greatest pride of this exclusive 'Splash' variation is its breathtaking coloration – the richly green leaf surface is generously adorned with bright, shimmering, and uneven silver drops and spots that literally look like splashes of stardust. Through the silver coating, three to five expressive main veins elegantly stand out, giving each leaf an outstanding 3D relief and sculptural depth. Currently, it is a small, compact, but already well-rooted and stable 10 cm young plant in a 10.5 cm pot, with huge growth potential. It is an air-purifying and incredibly long-lasting vine / trailing plant that will add an elite-class, modern, and distinctly luxurious tropical accent to any interior. It is a prestigious, joy-inducing, and absolutely unforgettable gift for passionate rarity hunters and those who adore the interplay of silver and large leaves!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Bright but MANDATORILY diffused light. Here lies the main secret of this plant’s stunning beauty: for the Hoya to maintain such an intense, pure silver splash coloration and for new leaves to develop as large as possible, it needs a lot of light (it will especially enjoy gentle morning or late evening sun rays). However, strictly protect it from direct, scorching midday sun rays, which will instantly burn its precious, large leaves. An east or west-facing windowsill is a perfect choice.
-
💧 Watering: Rare, moderate, and very careful! Like most large-leaf epiphytes, this plant stores huge water reserves in its juicy, leathery leaves. Water only when the soil in the pot has completely dried out to the bottom! Since the plant is in a stable 10.5 cm pot, it will retain moisture a bit longer, so the plant absolutely cannot tolerate root soaking in standing water in a saucer, which will quickly cause sensitive root rot. If in doubt – wait a few more days.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: A warmth-loving tropical resident (ideally +18°C to +25°C), which, thanks to its thick leaves, adapts relatively well and patiently to normal, dry indoor air. Of course, it will appreciate increased humidity (above 50-60%), which will help new leaves unfold even more grandly and splendidly. In winter, strictly protect it from cold drafts!
-
🐾 Pets: Friendly. This exclusive and magnificent wax flower is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe in your home with curious cats and dogs.
🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:
-
A bright and warm windowsill or shelf in morning/evening sun (ideal environment to maintain the unique silver coloration and easy placement due to its compact young plant size).
-
Modern living rooms, home offices, or plant cabinets, where this plant’s grand, silver leaves can later climb around a decorative trellis or hang lushly from the edge of a shelf, serving as an exquisite design element.
SPECIFICATIONS:
-
Height: 10 cm (compact baby seedling / very valuable and well-rooted young plant)
-
Pot diameter: 10.5 cm (stable and generous volume for this plant size)
⚠️ Note and reality check about wax flowers: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and the density of its silver areas on the leaves may vary slightly (some leaves may develop almost completely silver, others greener, and this is a natural and excitingly unpredictable characteristic of variegated plants). It is important to keep in mind that you are receiving a young plant! Small, exclusive seedlings should be handled more gently and patiently than mature plants at first. An important natural secret: Hoyas naturally grow as vines and sometimes produce long, bare shoots (strings) initially without leaves. Never cut these off! When the long string finds support (for example, a support ring) or enough light, new grand leaves will gradually grow on it. When repotting this plant in the distant future, be sure to use an extremely airy, porous, and loose epiphyte/orchid soil mix (generously mixed with perlite, coconut chips, and coarse orchid bark) so the roots receive maximum oxygen.
