Royal Dark Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura 'Dark')

Get ready to bring deep tropical drama, aristocratic elegance, and one of the most stunning rituals in the world of houseplants into your home or office – the breathtaking Dark Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura 'Dark' / 'Dark Massangeana')! This exclusive variety, highly prized by interior designers and houseplant enthusiasts alike, is a true work of living art. The plant’s greatest pride, magnet, and unmistakable signature is its breathtaking, waxy foliage: smooth, velvety leaves in rich, smoky dark green and almost-black tones emerge from the base, adorned with shimmering silver-green and coral-colored veins and a striking lighter area in the center. The maranta is legendary as a “prayer plant” (Prayer Plant) – as dusk sets in, its leaves gently rise vertically, folding together like praying hands, then open beautifully toward the light again in spring and summer mornings. In addition to its mystical aesthetic, the maranta actively purifies the air and brings lively dynamism into the home. It is currently a beautifully grown, strong, notably dense, bushy, and well-established 25 cm plant in a generously sized 12 cm pot. This is the most prestigious, tasteful, and unique gift for a housewarming, design enthusiasts, and anyone seeking the highest level of style in their interior!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • ☀️ Light: Moderate, gentle, but ABSOLUTELY filtered light or partial shade. This is where the main secret behind this plant’s dark pattern lies: the maranta naturally grows on the forest floor in tropical rainforests, so it needs filtered light to preserve its deep, smoky dark coloring and silvery veins. The plant adapts flawlessly and reliably to partial shade indoors as well. Strictly protect it from direct, scorching sunlight, which can quickly burn its velvety leaves and cause the colors to fade. An east- or west-facing windowsill, or a bright north-facing one, will be the perfect choice!

  • 💧 Watering: Regular, moderate, and very careful. The maranta prefers consistently light moisture in the soil, but it does not tolerate having its roots sit in stagnant water. Water the plant thoroughly as soon as the top layer of soil (the upper 1 cm of the pot) has dried slightly between waterings. The soil in the pot should be pleasantly moist, like a wrung-out sponge. Since the plant is in a stable 12 cm pot, it will retain moisture well, but the plant absolutely cannot tolerate its roots sitting in stagnant water in the saucer or decorative pot, as this will quickly cause rot. Important tip: it is best to water with lukewarm, soft, settled, or filtered water. Reduce watering slightly in winter.

  • 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: A heat-loving tropical resident (ideally +18°C to +24°C). The maranta greatly appreciates moderate to high humidity, so it will be extremely grateful to be placed near a humidifier or to receive regular air humidification (this helps prevent the leaf tips from turning brown). In winter, strictly protect it from the dry, hot air of heating radiators and cold, icy drafts!

  • 🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly. Marantas are completely non-toxic and absolutely safe to keep in your home with curious cats and dogs.

🏠 BEST LOCATION:

  • Bright or dimly lit living rooms, bedrooms, desks, and bedside tables, where this dark, prayerful silhouette can be viewed up close and serve as the main design accent.

  • Modern, Scandinavian, loft, or minimalist interiors, where clean lines and dark natural textures create a flawless visual balance and a cozy atmosphere.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Height: 25 cm (beautifully grown, strong, notably dense, bushy, and already highly eye-catching as a mature plant)

  • Pot diameter: 12 cm (a stable and generously sized pot that supports strong and healthy root system development)

⚠️ Note and a dose of reality about marantas: Plants are living organisms, so every specimen and the precise distribution of its smoky dark and silvery tones on each leaf is a completely unique work of nature – no two plants in the world are identical. As this is already a nicely grown plant in a stable 12 cm pot, it is strong and will not require immediate repotting for some time. When you repot it in the future, be SURE to use a light, peat-based, airy, and well-draining houseplant/maranta soil mix with added perlite and bark to provide the roots with oxygen and prevent water from accumulating.
