Shingle Monstera or Wax Monstera 'Dubia' (Monstera dubia)
This extremely exciting, modern, and visually stunning Monstera 'Dubia' (also known as the "shingle plant" or Shingle Plant) is one of the most unique and dynamic monstera species in the world! It is a true queen of transformations, featuring two completely different life phases. In its youth (as a young plant), it doesn’t grow sideways but climbs straight up a flat surface, with its heart-shaped leaves lying completely flat and pressed tightly against the support—literally resembling roof tiles or shingles. These young leaves are adorned with a charming, distinctly silvery and dark green mosaic pattern. Only when the monstera has climbed high enough and reached maturity will it start producing its famous, large, deeply split leaves, losing the silver pattern. Currently, it is a grown, strong 35 cm plant in a 14 cm pot, which comes with its climbing board. It is an exceptionally architectural, air-purifying, and long-lasting houseplant that will add a distinct luxury-class, tropical, and very modern natural accent to any interior. It is an exclusive and excellent gift for those who love to watch dramatic plant transformations and seek something completely different from the classic monstera!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Bright but diffused light. Here lies the main secret to this plant’s development: for the monstera to maintain its vivid silver pattern and have the energy to climb upwards, it needs plenty of light (it will especially enjoy morning or late evening sun). However, strictly protect it from direct, scorching midday sun rays, which will instantly burn its flat, delicate leaves and cause irreversible damage.
-
💧 Watering: Moderate and thoughtful. Allow the top layer of soil and the middle layer between watering sessions to dry out thoroughly! As a tropical liana, it absolutely cannot tolerate root soaking in standing water in the tray, which quickly causes root rot. It’s best to water when the top third of the pot feels completely dry.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Thrives well at standard room temperatures (+18°C to +25°C) and adapts relatively well to normal indoor air. However, being a native of Central and South American rainforests, it will be absolutely delighted by increased humidity – this helps its aerial roots better and more firmly "cling" to the wooden support. In winter, strictly protect it from cold drafts!
-
🐾 Pets: Keep away from pets. Like other monsteras, 'Dubia' contains calcium oxalate crystals, which are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. Place the plant out of their reach.
🏠 BEST LOCATION:
-
A bright and warm spot on the floor, shelf, or windowsill in morning/evening sun, where the plant’s climbing board has stable rear support (for example, against a wall).
-
Modern, minimalist interiors or home offices, where this plant’s unique vertical geometry and "living wall" effect will look exceptionally elegant.

⚠️ Note and reality check: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and the intensity of its silvery pattern may vary slightly. Important to know nature’s secrets: this monstera CANNOT grow downward as a hanging plant. If it reaches the end of its current wooden board and has nowhere to climb further, it will start producing long, bare vines with very small leaves, searching for new support. When the plant outgrows the board, simply attach an extension (a larger board or moss pole), or cut the tip and root it anew. When repotting this plant in the future, use an extremely airy, loose aroid soil mix (richly supplemented with orchid bark, coconut chips, and perlite) so the roots can breathe freely.
