Royal Needle Cascade Rhipsalis (Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides)
Get ready to bring the airy atmosphere of a tropical forest, an untamed cascade, and the most captivating needle-like structure in the world of houseplants into your home or office—the stunning Needle Cascade Rhipsalis (Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides)! This exclusive epiphyte of Brazil’s forests, highly prized among air-garden enthusiasts, is a true masterpiece of living nature, distinguished from other rhipsalis by its generous, delicately lace-like architecture. The plant’s greatest pride, magnet, and unmistakable signature is its breathtaking foliage: from the main stems, countless tiny, densely branched, fleshy shoots in a rich emerald green arrange themselves in a full clump, visually resembling delicate strings of coral branches or “needles”. When mature, the rhipsalis may delight you with delicate, airy white flowers that bloom along the edges of the shoots. ‘Mesembryanthemoides’ forms an exceptionally dense cascade that brings a light, modern, and cozy atmosphere to your home. It is currently a beautifully established, strong, notably dense, bushy, and stable 15–20 cm plant in a generously sized 12 cm pot. This is the most prestigious, tasteful, and unique gift for housewarmings, hanging pots, high shelves, and anyone seeking the ultimate level of green cascading beauty in their home!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Bright, generous, but ABSOLUTELY indirect light or moderate partial shade. This is the main secret behind the plant’s lush green needles: unlike desert cacti, the forest epiphyte Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides does not tolerate scorching sunlight. It needs plenty of filtered light (it will particularly enjoy gentle morning sun). Strictly protect it from direct, burning midday sun, which can quickly scorch its delicate shoots and cause them to turn yellow. An east- or west-facing windowsill will suit it best.
-
💧 Watering: Regular, moderate, and very careful. Rhipsalis prefers consistent, light moisture in the soil, but it does not tolerate having its roots sit in stagnant water. Water the plant thoroughly, but only when the top layer of soil (the upper 1 cm of the pot) has dried out between waterings. The soil in the pot should be pleasantly moist, like a wrung-out sponge. Since the plant is in a 12 cm pot, it will retain moisture well, but it absolutely cannot tolerate its roots sitting in stagnant water in the saucer, which can quickly cause the shoots to drop and lead to root rot. Reduce watering slightly in winter. Water with lukewarm, soft water.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: It thrives in moderate room temperatures (+18°C to +24°C). This epiphyte greatly appreciates moderate humidity and will be grateful for a position near a humidifier or gentle air humidification. In winter, protect it from the hot, dry air of radiators and temperatures below +12°C!
-
🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly / Non-toxic. Rhipsalis is non-toxic and completely safe to keep in your home with curious cats and dogs.
🏠 BEST ROOM:
-
Bright shelves, bookcases, hanging pots, and windowsills, where these lace-like green cascading shoots can hang freely, serving as the main interior accent.
-
Modern, loft, Scandinavian, or minimalist interiors, where clean lines and airy natural textures create the perfect visual balance.
SPECIFICATIONS:
-
Height: 15–20 cm (a beautifully established, strong, notably dense, bushy, and already visually prominent plant)
-
Pot diameter: 12 cm (a stable and generous volume that supports the development of a strong and healthy root system)
⚠️ Note and a dose of reality about rhipsalis: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and the precise growth pattern and length of its delicate “needle” shoots may vary slightly, creating a unique natural form. Since this is already a nicely established plant in a stable 12 cm pot, it is strong and will not require immediate repotting for some time. When you repot it in the future, ABSOLUTELY use a light, peat-based, porous, and well-draining houseplant, epiphyte, or cactus potting mix with a generous addition of perlite and pine bark to provide the roots with oxygen and prevent water from accumulating.
